Sure Thing, Shearling!

Shearling is the new recycled trend. The leather on the outside and warm fur (mostly faux) on the inside look has been around for the longest of times. I remember rocking a thigh length leather and fur (more like wool – it was all lamb) at the tender age of five in Russia. Sometimes, when the temperatures are dastardly unbearable in the winter, you have to reach for the warmest thing possible.

The look has returned in the most popular form of ankle booties and vests. I saw a gorgeous long sleeve shearling jacket in a magazine and was elated when the credits said it was from H&M. Off I went on my little red riding hood mission, only to find (after six stores and full floor searches) that the shearling was all knotty and cheap looking. It looked like it had more plastic and acrylic in it than wool or cotton, so my hopes and dreams were shattered. I took to the world wide web to find a better version under $100.

The look above is linked to each item, so if you want to see how much an item is, or what store sells it, just merrily point your mouse away. I tried to be diligent with the under $100 mark, so if you take a look around the web, you may find better options for a little more pennies and dimes.

As soon as I find my perfect darling shearling, I will let you know.

Are you into this trend?

Raise Your Glass

Change is going to come, right? Not so much. Sure, cassettes gave way to cds, and cds somewhat bowed out to digital downloads. Music videos gave way to reality television and the excitement waned. 2010 must have had a a refreshing Red Bull, because music videos are cool again. Release dates are honored like movie releases, and previews are slow and musical torture. First we had Katy Perry‘s California Gurls (feat. Snoop Dogg) and then Kanye took over the game with his mini movies, most recently Runaway.

Today Pink joins the masses and has us waiting for her the video to her new hit single Raise Your Glass (Explicit Version). In her interview with Access Hollywood she showed clips of herself sumo wrestling, comparing her character to the working man and her opponent to Wall Street.

Check out her past videos as we wait for the new one:

Eyeko NOTD

MyOwnJudgeI’m dedicating the weekend to spend as much time to catching up with product reviews, photo uploads, and videos as I possibly can. The weekend contains tentative plans to attend the Circle of Sisters at the Javits Center and setting up my mom with some nice lashes and a wig (oh yes, the woman is going to a costume party as I await Trick or Treat requests!).

I’ve been heinously behind in getting back to people on time, keeping up with a schedule and even cleaning the house. It’s beyond terrible! But enough about me.

After reviewing my cache of photos yet to be uploaded, I found a sorry sight. Why didn’t y’all scream at me with a collective yell yet? My Eyeko triple color debut has had only one NOTD for the longest time, and the other two were sitting in a folder awaiting their debut. Check out the other two that make the set complete.MyOwnJudgePetite Polish is a pretty and clean natural color. The only thing not to like about it is the sheerness. The top photo is the polish with flash and the above is without flash and what it looks like regularly. I like these types of colors because they have a way of making nails look dainty and clean without needing to do much work.
MyOwnJudge MyOwnJudgeTea Rose Polish is the kind of pink I usually don’t purchase. It’s a little too close to the safe side for me. Perfect for working in the office, or the gal who isn’t friends with neons and pastels. Nothing is wrong with that, it’s just, that’s not me. The photo on the left is with flash and the right is without. The photo on the right (and below) is how the color looks generally, and you have to be in some bright rooms or streets to catch a glimpse of the left. I wish it came off more like the color under flash.

This color applied much better than the Petite Polish and became opaque in two coats.MyOwnJudgeDrying time for both polishes was decent. Not too fast and not too slow. An average 10-20 minute wait depending on the amount of coats applied.

What’s on your nails?

Fall Layering

MyOwnJudge - Emily OsmentEmily Osment attended the Halloween Carnival in Los Angeles earlier last week, debuting the perfect fall style. Haley Joel‘s sister and Disney star was wearing the perfect style of layering for fall – the best way to make your summer wardrobe last longer by doubling up.

Pair short sleeve knits over longer sleeves.
This creates contrast, but also keeps your torso warm when chills come around.

Wrap a sock around that jean.
Socks are great for holding denim in place when tucking into boots, but when you have a knee high sock that peeks out of the boot, that’s even better.

Pair with some cute bangles in a complimentary jewel tone and a long strand necklace is all you need to complete the look.

How do you layer in Fall?

Are We Getting Too Sensitive?

MyOwnJudgePublic outcry used to be on a much lower volume in the past than it has become today. Sure, a lot of it has to do with how open conversation has become with the onslaught of technology and social media. I’ve often been guilty of using my phone to document the street crimes in fashion (leggings so see through you can point out the pattern on the underwear!) or just ludicrous (man using resistance bands at the crosswalk to exercise topless?) and sending them straight to Twitter or Facebook to get a jury’s verdict.

When something on television or in a magazine used to rub a person the wrong way, they would take to writing a letter, or trying to go to the news. Now? All they need to do is send an e-mail or post a tweet. Depending on how many people sympathize, a “shake my head” moment can snowball into public outrage in half a day.

The day Katy Perry dared to don a camisole on Sesame Street to do her Sesame version of Hot N Cold parents threw up their hands in protest, unhappy with that much skin being available for their toddlers to see. Maybe it’s because my parenting days are still ahead of me, but I saw nothing of the x rated fashion on the clip, and thought the parentals were going overboard.
MyOwnJudge
The parents weren’t happy again, when the cast members of  Glee did a shoot for GQ magazine, protesting that adults who played teenagers on a show shouldn’t do provocative photo shoots, and neared it to pedophelia. One of the “guilty” parties, Dianna Agron took to her blog to offer an apology of sorts. She apologized if parents were offended by the shoot but asked why an eight year old would be holding a copy of the magazine. She also mentioned that the shoot didn’t depict the “real” her, and that her dream shoot would involve dragons. I’m not always fond of the shoots men’s magazines do with the members of the Hollywood interest of the moment, but I agree. Were the parents mad when Marge Simpson hit the covers of Playboy?

In a world where the youth is growing up too fast under incorrect management, everyone is afraid to mirror the mistakes that plagued Brittany, Lindsey, et al. The new teens and tweens are often either too eager to get more exposure by exposing themselves, or have staff with big eyes for money behind them, not interested in preserving the integrity of their youth. Miley Cyrus‘ new video Who Owns My Heart, and Taylor Momsen‘s Revolver magazine cover are just the biggest example of such in current day. Even Willow Smith didn’t get a pass from the public, with critics saying she’s better off starting her career later because young Hollywood is destined to burn if they start early.

The internet has made it possible for people to follow another’s every step and action, and has given them the power to comment on the rights and wrongs of it right after. What used to be a slip up in an interview has become broader, and more along the lines of walking on egg shells.

It is human nature to make mistakes, but is it equally so to pass judgment? Throughout life we all make errors and learn from them. We’re not all fortunate enough to have a million followers submitting feedback. But in the end, who is right? Does freedom of speech cover criticizing a star for weight gain, a young woman for discussing her sexuality, or a grown woman from posing in a sexy shoot?

Did the internet give society the remote control (emphasis on control) on the good vs. the bad, or has mankind gotten a little too sensitive?

Blake Lively Scream Awards

MyOwnJudge - Blake LivelyIt girl Blake Lively experimented with fashion again on the runway for Spike‘s TV Scream Awards. She chose a gray two tone dress with a camel leather embellishment running down the middle.

The dress looks like there are three pieces to it, and they were added together in haste. Blake still pulls it off though, when she stands still. All of the photos of her from the event seem to show her fidgeting (or did she pose like this on purpose?) with the skirt of the dress to show off her gams, when they look just as fabulous peeking out of the skirt on their own.

She matched her heels to the neutral accent on the dress and kept the accessories to a minimum; a smart move for an ensemble that already has a lot to say.

The verdict in the courtroom is questionably innocent, but with some sort of parole. I need to see a toned down mini or classic Grecian drapery at the next event to make it up.

What do you guys think?

Remember to assess your financial abilities first and start small. You’re better off setting a $20 budget for five close friends and family members, or $10 for ten people and come out without debt at the end, rather than give everyone a brand name wish list item and then cry your tears in the privacy of your bank.

To kill two birds with one stone, sign up with the sample sale sites and promote them to your friends. Most sites give you credit for referring other people, and you will have a credit to shop in no time. My favorite is Shop It To Me, because you get gift cards of your choice for having people sign up for a free newsletter. My ultimate go to is Swagbucks though, you get points for using their search engine (works using Google so it’s pretty good) and then you can claim points for gift cards and cash.

Did you start holiday shopping yet?

She Whips Her Hair

Willow Smith debuted her song Whip My Hair a while back, but the video has graced the net today. The beautiful young girl is rocking some great styles and is letting her music speak volumes. The video is positively themed, without nudity or adult factors. Most of the scenes are tied in with the star dipping her braids into paint and whipping it around to paint the rooms a shade all her own. She has great hair styles in it, and the song is addictive (try and say otherwise!).

Think Pink NOTD

SpaRitual at ShopStyle

Last week I had the pleasure of attending a press product preview event where I got to meet different brands and learn about products that just entered the market, along with ones that will be launching soon. I like these types of events for more than just the brand familiarity. You get a sneak peek into the future of cosmetics and trending, and you start feeling like someone slipped you some insider info.

The event worked with SPARTY! Never heard of them? The company, whose slogan is “Sip, Spa, Celebrate” helps make all events interesting by supplying everything and anything you need. Catering? Massages? Drinks? Manicures? They make it happen. This is a great idea for baby and wedding showers, or even birthday and location events.

When I heard about the manis, I spent my whole hour of travel time wondering what brand they’d be using and what color I would come home with on my digits. The winner was SpaRitual in Strike a Pose.
MyOwnJudge SpaRitual Strike a Pose
MyOwnJudge SpaRitual Strike a Pose MyOwnJudge SpaRitual Strike a Pose
I grabbed the pink shade to commemorate October being Breast Cancer Awareness month. Strike a Pose isn’t too bright and outspoken, nor too dull and prude. Just enough oomph for every pair of hands available. The consistency was a little less opaque than I expected it to be, but it’s still a pretty color.

Are you rocking pink in October?
