Tom Ford SS 2011

MyOwnJudgeThe magazine rush to be the first name to cover the secretive and small Tom Ford presentation of his Spring/Summer 2011 collection was probably epic. The designer closed off all cameras and video sources from his presentation and only wanted the bigwigs to attend. Ford complained that the industry and shows became too instant, that one second you create something, and the next there are fifty million posts, tweets, and comments about it. MyOwnJudgeTechnological advancement is definitely the foundation to this blessing and curse. The costs can become cheaper to produce a show and add a live feed for the public, as well as reach a larger audience than the limitations of seats and architecture. Then again, some people most certainly miss the days of covering a show and anticipating it’s review appearing in print days later rather than minutes. Some may argue that it keeps the event special. Though I can agree about the validity of the concerns, I can also say it’s pleasant to be involved in the goings on of events and presentations outside of getting a magazine in the mail, proclaiming which items are hot and which are not. As an aspiring media member, it also feels equally as special to have the doors magically move aside and let you in for a closer peek, so that you may give yet another spin on what the trends are, and what’s hot.MyOwnJudgeVogue tied the race as the first to feature the collection shots online and in print (their December issue), whereas the draw’s other half is Harper’s Bazaar UK, with photos from the actual presentation. Both are surefire hits, and definite selling points as well.

Your verdict?

Hollywood Is Dead

MyOwnJudgeHollywood took a digital sacrifice for World AIDS Day, benefiting the Keep A Child Alive charity today as the big names declared their social media accounts dead. Twitter accounts for Serena Williams, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, etc. are mum until they reach their goal of a million dollars in donations.

So far, there are a bit over $60,000 on the BuyLife site. You can donate online or by texting ‘BuyLife’ or any of the celebs names to 90999 (Kim for Kim Kardashian, Alicia for Alicia Keys, Janelle for Janelle Monae, etc.).

Though a worthy cause, it leaves me wondering, if some people would delay donations for several days of Twitter chatter silence. Don’t let those temptations keep you from adding your voice to supporting the cause though.

How are you making a change on World AIDS Day?

Gossip Girl Lace Dos and Don’ts

MyOwnJudgeLeighton Meester‘s (center) recent lace jumper raised plenty debate. Was it a fashion do or don’t? Was it forward thinking or backwards reasoning? I took to the pages of Google images to check if the Gossip Girl costars, Blake Lively (far left) and Taylor Momsen (far right).

The findings? Outfits that would call for questions about where the rest of the dress is and a dowdy getup on a teen who as of late, would rather show more skin than fabric.

The bad cannot outweigh the good, though. Celebrities have the Catch 22 of being in the public eye and not being allowed mistakes, whether personal or just fashion related. With that said, when we take them to court, we must have damning and redeeming evidence.

Here are how the stars wore lace with more success:MyOwnJudge
What’s your verdict?

Golly Gee Whillikers, Batwings!

Remember the old times of Batman, when Robin would always have crazy exclamations (check out iMdb for some more memorable quotes)? Well the Cyber Weekend has made my mind go batty.

The Norma Kamali batwing top from Walmart reminds me of Beetlejuice (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) meets The Addams Family. The stripe combination of dark grey to black is just enough for it to become a far away optical illusion and adds more slimming properties than the regularly fattening support that stripes often donate to the wearer.

Batwing is a favorite style of mine. First of all – there are no sweat stains to think of, ever. For someone who sweats profusely, this is a major plus. Second, the style is super shape conscious. The extra space around the bust and shoulders is actually slimming when you consider how it tapers at the sleeves and the waist for a slimming effect (it might not be a genius idea for gals with a big bust who want to minimize though, as it may just make it look bigger). The style is also super dramatic and regal (think about putting your hands on your waist). Oh and this cutie pie? It costs $12 thankyouverymuch (and shipping is 97cents, so it remains a win).

Check out some more batwing styles below. Click on any of the images to see how much they hurt the wallet, you might need one for the holidays. Is the style a win(g) for you too, or is it just me that’s gone bat(ty)? 🙂

Cyber Monday Deals

It’s that time y’all. Cyber Monday deals are out. I’ve gathered all that I could, so in exchange, you have to tell me where you spent!

Before you shop, sign up with Ebates to get cash back on virtually all your purchases and Swagbucks to get paid for your searches (they have a similar cash back system as well).

Also – to be on the safe side, stick to websites you are familiar with. Don’t answer e-mails (or click on the links they enclose) if it looks funny. Enter the website address manually and see if the offer is still there. A lot of con artists recreate the landing page of a well known website to steal information. The only way they can do that, is if they can redirect you through their links. While watching the news, it was also suggested to use a low limit card for online purchases, so that in the event that there is someone who snatches your information, they can’t go bonkers with it. That might be a little too late (plus who in the world got enough cards to designate one for just online purchases!?), but good ideas for next round – or the continuous holiday shopping.

I took a cue from my girl Rai over at Glam-Morena and alphabetized my list. I also added a whole lot (let’s not discuss how long it took me thankyouverymuch) and tried to search through my inbox for more goodies.

Make sure to sign up to these sample sale sites so that you get deals like these all day everyday.

Cyber Weekend Deals to be Thankful For

If you’re like me, and your midnight madness starts in the comfort of your own home, by the computer with leftovers just steps away, you will be thankful that Cyber Monday has come early in the form of a Cyber Weekend.

Many retailers are reaching out to their customers throughout the net as a wider net. One favorite of mine, Express even had to buckle under pressure and offer their 40% sitewide discount until the end of Friday because the traffic caused the website to go down.

Make sure you take a quick peek at the deals below and over the net for wherever and whatever you buy, and if you venture out into the cruel cold world of sales (not that cruel with deals like $400 off flat screens, eh?), when you come back, take a peek at what you may *need* in addition to what you got. Don’t forget to use these discounts for holiday purchases, spruce up the house deals, and something for yourself (don’t forget your furry friends either)!

Black Friday Sale Notices Begin

MyOwnJudgeNotices for deals following Thanksgiving are starting to peek through curtains and announce their presence. I am torn between saving money and buying everything the eyes can see to save money. Sales give me considerable guilt – for either purchasing, or choosing not to. You just can’t win!

Bookmark http://www.stilacosmetics.com/warehousesale in your web browser and wait ten days for the Stila warehouse sale. Something tells me you won’t be disappointed.

Live in California? Check out the sale in person on December 11. Check out details here.

Rock Star Mani

As promised (although a little while back), the Revlon out of this world colors have made it to my nails. After a long awaited pause for my nails to quit their whining and regain a healthy look, I can finally wear colors and show you (otherwise, I just wear twenty colors at a time and refrain from photographs!). I have been trying to change them up every few days, because a major clean of the house is in order, and every time I seem to take on that project, I say farewell to my nails.MyOwnJudge MyOwnJudgeRock is a very attractive creamy purple. Purples in a bright consistency without any false shimmer to it (you know – when the bottle looks purple, but on the nail it looks more metallic?) are the best polishes to own. A natural purple is also hard to achieve, as many just get darker and look more vampy unless in direct sunlight.
MyOwnJudge MyOwnJudgeHere, Star is layered above the Rock polish. It contains different sizes of glitters, but is a little difficult to get an even coating of confetti and glitter on a nail. When using, you end up applying far too many coats to have the desired amount of glitter on your nails. Regardless though, the duo looks great to me.MyOwnJudge

What does your Rock Star mani look like?

Rihanna – Monochromatic Looks

MyOwnJudgeThe only always successful monochromatic look anyone can pull off is when they wear all black. Even then, there might be the issue of deciding if you are a character from The Matrix. It is harder to match colors of a different shade, and sometimes questionable if you are the epitome of the variation of colors from head to toe. Ever see someone wearing light blue to dark blue all over? How many times was it a success?

Rihanna visited the color wheel right before she made her appearance on 106 and Park for BET Studios (so everyone is visiting New York right about now!) promoting her new album, Loud. Her large knit sweater matched the pastel green of her leggings. The light color of the leggings verges on being unflattering on her (let alone people who don’t train or perform regularly!) and could have used a pattern, embellishment, or even a thicker material.

She did adhere to the “tight on the bottom, loose on the top (and vice versa)” rule, keeping her from turning into an ice cream colored blob, but I feel like she could’ve done better. The look came off leisurely and relaxed (the straight hair also added to the look, because it wasn’t as fancy as we I expected), but was inches away from being a bit of a disaster.

To copy the look, try darker leggings or tight jeans/pants instead. Embellishments, like black trim along the sides will deflect from any problem areas you have in your bottom half (I know I have some dimples that no leggings will care to hide).

Here are some ideas:
