Sally Hansen Problem Child

This is a story all about how… yours truly walked into a drugstore (Duane Reade) and failed to leave empty handed yet again. My new indulgence? Two colors that caught my eye for different reasons.

Sally Hansen‘s Problem Child is a purple creamy pearl shade (make sense?) with a slight black and metallic overtone. The best part are the gold flecks swimming around the bottle. Touch of Mink was a must as the new addition to my gray/brown family. The color just looks so darn smooth.I could have a photo shoot with just the bottle.After complete and utter joy at swatching the first shade (and thus a plea to ignore the lack of signs of a cleanup by the cuticles), I found that the gold flecks, though visible, are more clear under intense inspection, but rather hidden and secretive – a bit like a hallucination moment from afar.

What’s on Gwen’s Nails?

Gwen Stefani refreshed her manicure at Planet Nails in West Hollywood (it’s a favorite nail spot- she got several manicures there earlier, check out the photos here and here) this past Saturday. She got a matching gunmetal color for her mani-pedi.

OCC Nails of the Day

I’ve been slightly obsessed with beige grey (or greige) nail colors for the longest time. As soon as a chill entered the air, the color entered my shopping list. Much like purple shades, there is not one that I have come across that is identical to the other.
My polish of choice for a couple of days (as I try to do a different color every couple of days so as not to waste all that my hard earned money paid off VISA for!) is Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics polish in Uber. As you may have guessed, the left photo is with flash, and the right is without (and disregard the snafu smack dab center of the index finger).

The color perfectly matches the same name liptar (read the post about it here). The color goes on really smooth and dries super quick (especially if you take a pause in between each coat). See what other colors you can get on the site.

Rock Star Mani

As promised (although a little while back), the Revlon out of this world colors have made it to my nails. After a long awaited pause for my nails to quit their whining and regain a healthy look, I can finally wear colors and show you (otherwise, I just wear twenty colors at a time and refrain from photographs!). I have been trying to change them up every few days, because a major clean of the house is in order, and every time I seem to take on that project, I say farewell to my nails. Rock is a very attractive creamy purple. Purples in a bright consistency without any false shimmer to it (you know – when the bottle looks purple, but on the nail it looks more metallic?) are the best polishes to own. A natural purple is also hard to achieve, as many just get darker and look more vampy unless in direct sunlight.
Here, Star is layered above the Rock polish. It contains different sizes of glitters, but is a little difficult to get an even coating of confetti and glitter on a nail. When using, you end up applying far too many coats to have the desired amount of glitter on your nails. Regardless though, the duo looks great to me.

American Apparel Debuts New Colors

American Apparel has been long known for their basics and decorative garments (as well as the photography in their advertisements and let’s call it “unsavory” business deals), but it is still an infant in the nail polish business.

This status hasn’t stopped the company from creating a memorable bottle with an equally unforgettable consistency of nail polish sure to win over any diva with a manicure. All the colors contain high concentrations of each color, making it an easy purchase, given that what you see is what you get.
The brand debuted some new colors, and being the purple fiend that I am, you already know which color went to the top of my shopping list.

The polishes retail for $6 a bottle and are available to be purchased in preset sets of three (although when I was at the physical store, you could choose your own combination) or seven for cheaper per bottle rates.

China Glaze Lights Up the Holidays

It may have taken me a bit to post the color swatches of these polishes, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Mostly, I spent the time checking out each color and turning into a mad scientist mixing them.

What am I talking about? Remember the China Glaze Limited Edition holiday colors? Yeah – I’ve been having a jolly good time with those.

The holiday collection features some beautiful whites, reds, and greens. I understood the red and green but had to dig deep for the white. Once I made the snow correlation, I felt a little silly. The holiday collection consists of a whopping roster of 16 colors featuring (in addition to the white, reds, and greens) a blue and an Olympic bronze-y copper, silver, and gold.The colors photographed with flash. These are all pretty true to how the colors look in person. All swatches were done with two coats.

Then I had a bright idea. Sure, the matte craze has died down a bit. Companies have released plenty of matte topcoats (some better than others), and are back to their creams, satins, and shimmers. But how does it look flat?Pretty fancy, eh? I am the most happiest with the metal colors when matte. They look like they’re hiding behind frosted glass.

Lest you thought I was done with the experimenting though, I continued to mix colors (only with coats) to see if I was missing out on some kind of secret.

See my math equations? Ha! I’m loving how all the glitters look mixed together, but Party Hearty also looks beyond awesome as a top coat to nearly everything.

Eyeko NOTD

I’m dedicating the weekend to spend as much time to catching up with product reviews, photo uploads, and videos as I possibly can. The weekend contains tentative plans to attend the Circle of Sisters at the Javits Center and setting up my mom with some nice lashes and a wig (oh yes, the woman is going to a costume party as I await Trick or Treat requests!).

I’ve been heinously behind in getting back to people on time, keeping up with a schedule and even cleaning the house. It’s beyond terrible! But enough about me.

After reviewing my cache of photos yet to be uploaded, I found a sorry sight. Why didn’t y’all scream at me with a collective yell yet? My Eyeko triple color debut has had only one NOTD for the longest time, and the other two were sitting in a folder awaiting their debut. Check out the other two that make the set complete.Petite Polish is a pretty and clean natural color. The only thing not to like about it is the sheerness. The top photo is the polish with flash and the above is without flash and what it looks like regularly. I like these types of colors because they have a way of making nails look dainty and clean without needing to do much work.
Tea Rose Polish is the kind of pink I usually don’t purchase. It’s a little too close to the safe side for me. Perfect for working in the office, or the gal who isn’t friends with neons and pastels. Nothing is wrong with that, it’s just, that’s not me. The photo on the left is with flash and the right is without. The photo on the right (and below) is how the color looks generally, and you have to be in some bright rooms or streets to catch a glimpse of the left. I wish it came off more like the color under flash.

This color applied much better than the Petite Polish and became opaque in two coats.Drying time for both polishes was decent. Not too fast and not too slow. An average 10-20 minute wait depending on the amount of coats applied.

American Apparel Nails

I’ve been a nail polish glutton this past week. There are periods when each day brings a new pack of polishes into my life and has people (especially the honey) scratching their heads about how much polish is really needed in one’s life. I grabbed three American Apparel colors most recently.

Mattesse Elite NOTD

Social media is a double edged sword. Sometimes, you experience the good, you find new products, new brands, new friends. You learn new information and you hear about sales, etc. The dark side of it all is the negativity (as you may have seen in the news) where people grow larger than life personalities when behind a monitor. The real negative for me at the moment though, is all the unnecessary temptation it causes for me to shop. If cosmetics and nail polish were in the garden of Eden, I would’ve been kicked out mighty fast.

When New York retailer Ricky’s (don’t let that turn you off, they ship everywhere) posted alerts of their new Orgasmic collection polishes on Twitter, I was salivating for the color Hard Edge. After chatting them up, I had a couple of suggested stores to visit for optimal stock of the color I wanted (Hard Edge). That was it. I fed into the temptation. No more conviction necessary, I was headed to the store. Then it got worse. After visiting multiple stores looking for the color I wanted, I fell in love with other colors. Blasphemy!

I came home with my tail between my legs and three polishes in hand (not a single one of them the one I went to look for in the first place). At least the colors are pretty (find the upside!). First up is Amazing Rush.

I tried to take the picture in sunlight by my window, but something wasn’t meant to be. What’s meant to be daylight on the left without flash is actually how it looks in the dark, or with poor lighting. The photo on the right is with flash and is how the color looks naturally. It’s a great green gold with plenty shimmer.

The first coat applies half sheer and doesn’t promise much good stuff. The second coat erases all doubt. The best part about this mani is that a base coat plus two thin coats only needed a total of fifteen minutes or so drying time. The nails dried super duper smooth and I was off pulling my too tight jean zipper within minutes. The color is pleasantly unexpected. It has the right amount of everything that is loud and requires control, without going overboard. The color looks great on my skin (even if I say so myself), and I think that statement would be unanimous with anyone who wore it. Plus, the polish is only $5.99. Less than most drugstore brands.
