Sure Thing, Shearling!

Shearling is the new recycled trend. The leather on the outside and warm fur (mostly faux) on the inside look has been around for the longest of times. I remember rocking a thigh length leather and fur (more like wool – it was all lamb) at the tender age of five in Russia. Sometimes, when the temperatures are dastardly unbearable in the winter, you have to reach for the warmest thing possible.

The look has returned in the most popular form of ankle booties and vests. I saw a gorgeous long sleeve shearling jacket in a magazine and was elated when the credits said it was from H&M. Off I went on my little red riding hood mission, only to find (after six stores and full floor searches) that the shearling was all knotty and cheap looking. It looked like it had more plastic and acrylic in it than wool or cotton, so my hopes and dreams were shattered. I took to the world wide web to find a better version under $100.

The look above is linked to each item, so if you want to see how much an item is, or what store sells it, just merrily point your mouse away. I tried to be diligent with the under $100 mark, so if you take a look around the web, you may find better options for a little more pennies and dimes.

As soon as I find my perfect darling shearling, I will let you know.

Are you into this trend?

Raise Your Glass

Change is going to come, right? Not so much. Sure, cassettes gave way to cds, and cds somewhat bowed out to digital downloads. Music videos gave way to reality television and the excitement waned. 2010 must have had a a refreshing Red Bull, because music videos are cool again. Release dates are honored like movie releases, and previews are slow and musical torture. First we had Katy Perry‘s California Gurls (feat. Snoop Dogg) and then Kanye took over the game with his mini movies, most recently Runaway.

Today Pink joins the masses and has us waiting for her the video to her new hit single Raise Your Glass (Explicit Version). In her interview with Access Hollywood she showed clips of herself sumo wrestling, comparing her character to the working man and her opponent to Wall Street.

Check out her past videos as we wait for the new one:

Rihanna has a Carmen moment

MyOwnJudgeDuring her recent visit to London, Rihanna graced the stages of X Factor with a performance of her new single Only Girl (In The World). She got on stage with a pale pink bustier dress with an exaggerated ruffle/flounce skirt half giving everyone a peek at bubble bloomers.

Her red hair was a perfect contrast to her green eyeshadow and burgundy lips, but best of all, it was a great setting for her garden of a headpiece. As I looked over the pictures, it finally came to me. She’s rocking a mixture of Madonna and Carmen Miranda. Do you see it?!
MyOwnJudgeCheck out other celebs who found similar inspiration, and the video of the X Factor performance after the jump.
MyOwnJudgeKristen Wiig did an inspirational photo shoot for V Magazine featuring looks of Carmen Miranda and Frieda Kahlo. It was a refreshing change from lingerie clad gals with lashes and lip glosses in stock.

If your Halloween partying is yet to be over and you want to copy the look, all you need is a long skirt, a peasant top, layer a couple bead necklaces, and large earrings. The look can go off without a hitch with or without a headwrap (not necessarily gold either). Keep the makeup as loud as the flowers in your head and keep the spirits high!

Trick or treating come to a close? Keep the costume in mind for next year. In the meantime, check out the performance:

Like it? Love it?

Wet n’ Wild Lipsticks

MyOwnJudgeThe last time I stepped foot into Rite Aid, they were having killer sales on all things unnecessary but pretty. Wet n’ Wild products were 40% off and the new Mega Last lipsticks were calling my name. Being that each one was $2.99, I figured if I got all four colors I was itching to try, one would be free, considering the discount. For $3 a pop I honestly would have tried them without the sale as well, but a brand can normally slip under the radar if they don’t make some kind of money saving commotion to land in the weekly paper.

Lips take center stage! This 4-hour, longwearing lip color leaves a semi-matte, crème finish in one stroke. Glides on easily with rich, velvety color that doesn’t cake, feather, or bleed. Made with hydrating skin-care ingredients: Hyaluronic Microspheres provide extraordinary adhesion to lips, an exclusive polymer complex offers cushion-like feel and texture, and natural marine plant extracts Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamins A & E help smooth lips. (source)

I got the following colors:
MyOwnJudge
Usually, customers don’t expect the same color payoff and product performance from a product that is so cheap, but ladies and gents of the jury. When I tell you these lipsticks baffled me?! How can the company afford something so good for so cheap a price?!
MyOwnJudge
These swatches are after one swipe. The description does not lie! The pigmentation was jam packed with bright goodness. For the most part, the colors I chose were a good match for me, and I dare say universally flattering as well.MyOwnJudge
The lipsticks appear more matte than creamy, but they have a generally creamy application (if that makes sense).

Though I was very pleased with the lipsticks, there were two things that drove me crazy. First, the lipsticks are so pigmented, that you almost have to use a lip brush to apply the product (especially the brighter colors) for neat application within the lines. As far as the bleeding goes, there is absolutely none. Second was the packaging. Y’all know I judge packaging almost as closely as the product itself, so this had to be addressed.

The packaging contains the color name, which isn’t the smartest thing if you want a name to reference in the future, or well – just because. I have been guilty of unwittingly buying doubles and triples of products, usually because I did not have the name handy to double check (an excuse on my part, but a minor thumbs down nonetheless). Another packaging peeve? The ‘peel here’ and perforation are on opposite sides!
MyOwnJudge I’m not sure if it was just the batch I got, or if they just had to sacrifice packaging for quality. Personally, I’ll readily make that sacrifice. I normally attack the packaging like a fiend anyhow.

Stay tuned for more swatches soon!

Have you tried these yet?

Eyeko NOTD

MyOwnJudgeI’m dedicating the weekend to spend as much time to catching up with product reviews, photo uploads, and videos as I possibly can. The weekend contains tentative plans to attend the Circle of Sisters at the Javits Center and setting up my mom with some nice lashes and a wig (oh yes, the woman is going to a costume party as I await Trick or Treat requests!).

I’ve been heinously behind in getting back to people on time, keeping up with a schedule and even cleaning the house. It’s beyond terrible! But enough about me.

After reviewing my cache of photos yet to be uploaded, I found a sorry sight. Why didn’t y’all scream at me with a collective yell yet? My Eyeko triple color debut has had only one NOTD for the longest time, and the other two were sitting in a folder awaiting their debut. Check out the other two that make the set complete.MyOwnJudgePetite Polish is a pretty and clean natural color. The only thing not to like about it is the sheerness. The top photo is the polish with flash and the above is without flash and what it looks like regularly. I like these types of colors because they have a way of making nails look dainty and clean without needing to do much work.
MyOwnJudge MyOwnJudgeTea Rose Polish is the kind of pink I usually don’t purchase. It’s a little too close to the safe side for me. Perfect for working in the office, or the gal who isn’t friends with neons and pastels. Nothing is wrong with that, it’s just, that’s not me. The photo on the left is with flash and the right is without. The photo on the right (and below) is how the color looks generally, and you have to be in some bright rooms or streets to catch a glimpse of the left. I wish it came off more like the color under flash.

This color applied much better than the Petite Polish and became opaque in two coats.MyOwnJudgeDrying time for both polishes was decent. Not too fast and not too slow. An average 10-20 minute wait depending on the amount of coats applied.

What’s on your nails?

Mizani Event Coverage

MyOwnJudge - MizaniI have been battling with my phone for weeks. Every time I forget my camera, I rely on the simple Berry to take as close photos as possible. Nothing beats the clarity that a camera can offer, and I do admit appreciating my deceased iPhone camera to the one on my Blackberry, but you work with what you have, right? It was funny that as I came to terms of never being able to load the photos from my phone onto my computer (it wouldn’t appear as plugged in), lo and behold! It cooperates!

As mentioned in the review, Mizani debuted their Supreme hair oil recently, and had an event where they showcased styles and the product itself. I was hoping I’d be able to show you the images earlier, but this will do.
MyOwnJudge - Mizani
The whole night I was fawning over how great the event space was decorated. It was very natural and earthy, but uber stylish at the same time. They had elements of the oil’s ingredients all around (avocado oil, coconut oil, etc.).

MyOwnJudge - Mizani
They had the cutest snacks (have you ever thought of putting cheese on a stick pops out as hor’dourves?) including white chocolate lollipops, sushi bites on trays in between flowers, apple and apricot tarts atop toasters (yes I said toasters), and more. The best part were the drinks. A mix of vodka, mango juice, and cranberry liquor (as told to me by a server – you know I hounded them for the mix!) with a dried apricot instead of a lemon on the rim.
MyOwnJudge - Mizani MyOwnJudge - Mizani
The brand presented four models with a variety of hair types (do you know what yours is?) from 1/2 to 7/8. I wasn’t able to get a good photo of the last girl, so you’ll have to forgive me.
MyOwnJudge - Mizani MyOwnJudge - Mizani
The stylists followed up with a five minute challenge to transform styled hair into a different ‘do with only the oil and as quick as possible.
MyOwnJudge - Mizani MyOwnJudge - Mizani
The next presentation involved using the oil as a sealant and shine tool for a blowout. The model had the front part of her hair unfinished and the stylist completed the blowout with ease (and in under ten minutes – the whole head would probably be refreshingly quick as well).

Ombre Showdown

MyOwnJudge - Ombre Hair
After a brief fascination with ombre coloring in clothes (still my favorite), fashion and celebrities fine tuned their microscopes on hair. Ombre hair is now a more natural (and much more affordable) method for coloring hair. The colored hair grows out, letting the ends serve as a darker color, thus forming a slight wash from light to dark. I assume the same can be done in reverse (but would be a little harder to get the shading to remain not choppy).

Drew Barrymore rocked the trend to each magazine and website’s delight, but during her recent visit to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Hillary Duff showed that she too, is proficient in the ways of ombre. Her hair is embracing the trend with a little more tenderness, as there is not as strong a contrast from the lightest to the darkest color. Shoot, it may have even been an accident (though I doubt it).

How do you like the style?

China’s Fashion Week Trumps All Makeup

MyOwnJudge
Fashion Week in China started off with a bang with bright colors and high hair for the EONFASHION AWARD 2011 China Fashion Week Make-up Styling Contest during S/S 11 presentations on October 25, 2010 in Beijing.

I am unsure if there was a running them for participants, but the looks vary from plant/sea/nature inspired with bright colors and a technological/alien inspiration. It’s amazing to see what each country contributes to the Fashion Week merry go round.

Which look is your favorite?

Gentlemen’s Ball

MyOwnJudge - Gentlemen's Ball
The fashion conundrum continues. As event invites roll in, no matter the occasion, there is practically no dress code for the male. Most often, there are two choices – the denim and button down or the black tux.

What confuses me is that at no point are the gentlemen ever at a disadvantage. They have stylists, shoppers, girlfriends, and friends, out of whom at least one person may be able to offer fashion advice (especially if they have a stylist on staff!). Are the stylists for men less capable/knowledgeable than those employed by women? I’d ask if there was a shortage of clothing outside of denim and black tuxes, but frankly, I know the answer to that one, I am an addict to shopping after all!

The male stars attending the Gentlemen’s Ball refused to push the envelope. The closest one came was Chris Brown, with a leather and wool varsity jacket. David Arquette marched to the beat of his own drum, as customary, and Trey Songz and Nick Cannon probably spent five minutes getting ready, donning an all black tux ensemble. All of the above styles are appropriate for the event, though all lack imagination. Bob was dressed far too casual (as if he was there for an outdoor concert in the park).

I don’t need a male Gaga, but I’d like men to play with fashion. It’s there for them too.

Do you agree?
