Emmys Ladies

Did you watch the Emmys last night? Sometimes days come and go so fast, it becomes a surprise that it started and ended. Yesterday I was flipping channels in between watching the Kardashians and the Spin Crowd, as well as the Steelers vs. Broncos game and the Emmys. I find it most entertaining when every second is filled with some form of entertainment when the other channels start to slack. Anyone else a crazy channel surfer?

Emmys 2010
Before any of the shows, my eyes were glued to E! Entertainment‘s red carpet coverage of the Emmy arrivals. I was watching the styles for a memorable fashion moment, as it customary every year with awards shows and was a little disappointed.

The styles were mostly mermaid dresses and strapless at that (we all know how much I dislike strapless garments). The color choices were pretty traditional, sticking to either end of the color spectrum; white and tan and navy and black, with minimal variety in between. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed it all, but I was a little let down. I would’ve preferred the ladies take more risks. The Emmys isn’t that strict of an awards show, you’re allowed fun!

But enough complaining, keep reading to check out what I loved!

Emmys 2010

My standout dress of the show was worn by Carrie Preston. It had interesting draping and side/back and was an interesting color. Of course, it complimented her hair magically as well.

Kim Kardashian came in an uncharacteristically more natural makeup look, swept back hair, and Grecian dress. I like this side of her! Another reality television pair that hit the top five for me were Lo Bosworth and Stephanie Pratt. They teamed up with stylists (on E!), and Stila makeup artist Sarah Lucero to do a Madmen makeover. The “after” totally blew the “before” out of the water!

Emmys 2010

There wasn’t much leg being shown at the Emmys and I think I know what to blame it on. How many of y’all know someone (maybe even you – lord knows I’m guilty!) who didn’t want to shave her legs and put on pants or a maxi dress instead? That’s my conspiracy theory for this awards show. Kudos to the ladies that broke out the minis!

Did you watch the Emmys? What did you like/love about the fashion?

Nails Fresh(ly)Cover(ed)

FreshCover Nail Color - Cuba BellaRemember my trip to Duane Reade? Well the new beauty center formerly known as a drugstore (select locations only) tempted my wallets plenty in one day.

http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=myowju-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B002Q2DHUA&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifrMy newest indulgence is a nail polish brand I was far from being familiar with. Have you heard of Freshcover Nail Color? I didn’t.

I will be very honest and tell you I cared much less for the quality, or anything, really, once I saw the bottle shape. The handle was so interesting and pleasantly odd. The only thing left for me to choose was the color to take home with me. You know – sometimes I feel like items are meant to come home with me. Ever justify your shopaholic impulses so?

Continuing my search for the perfect range of coral polishes (because the search for the perfect one only taught me that I like too many to choose just one!), I chose Cuba Bella and continued to wander around the store.

Check out how they performed on the digits:

FreshCover Nail Color - Cuba Bella

This coral is the most relaxed and easygoing shade of coral I have ever come across. I say this as though the color and bottle have a personality, but when you have purchasing habits similar to mine, you start building relationships with inanimate objects, partly from the financial guilt, and otherwise from the love of all things colorful and beauty.

Though I enjoyed the application, the overall experience was weak. The polish is a little weak in opaqueness and seems to me to be a mix between a jelly and an opaque polish, ending up a bit sheer and temporary. The wear for this polish was also not perfect – about three days before chips appeared.

I’d recommend this to a gal who does her own nails and frequently switches it up, if the bottle tickles your fancy, like it did for me, then that’s a plus too. Otherwise – save your dineros!

Have you tried FreshCover polish?

Pain in the Bra

Perfect BraGet ready for some TMI and some venting fam. My number one peeve in fashion is strapless garments. Why? Because I have no undergarment that will keep me satisfied and supported. NOT ONE!

Sure, I try to fake the funk and put on a bra here and there, you know the one, promises to be great and universal, flattering and push up, all the good stuff, none of the bad, only to be an epic fail in the end.

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m so finicky that no undergarment will ever make me happy. Maybe other people have hit their jackpot and my golden ticket is patiently humming on it’s hanger as it waits for me to open my eyes. I hang on dearly to that maybe and to this day look at everything that is strapless with disdain. Sure I wear a strapless dress here and there, but I feel like it either cuts my top half into quarters and eights of a whole, or flattens and pulls down more than gravity intends for my current age, neither being my goal.

With that said, I have two fashionista friends who have inspired me to get back on the hunt for a good strapless bra. I was told to find a boned corset low back from Macy’s or peruse through the online racks of Bare Necessities. I’ve found flops in every attempt in my past, so I don’t really think I can lose anything but time.

What brand/style do you swear by? Any secrets?

Dear Kate, Is that Loeffler Randall on your feet?

My inbox is a little sickly with the amount of sites and sale notices I’m subscribed to. I am trying to minimize the clutter, but in the meantime I often just erase in bulk so as to see my inbox numbers below a thousand. Sometimes that may mean I miss out on the good stuff. Not so this past week!

Kate Hudson

I caught an email from JustJared about Kate Hudson enjoying a good day in London with her new beau, but that’s not he cool part. The best was on her feet! She had a pair of booties on with triangle heels. I love odd heels and these are just too cute. I tried to scour the net for a replica and the closest I got were Loeffler Randall booties. No identical twins though.

How do you like ’em?

You Be The Judge! J to the Lo

It’s been a bit of a forever since I posted the inaugural You Be the Judge post, so today as I was making a valiant effort to check out the MOJ Facebook and Twitter page as well as clean out my e-mail with minimal distractions (I said I tried), I realized I had plenty gals who were itching to have a post done about ’em.

In comes Jennifer Lopez. I wanted to pick someone who had plenty of looks and not an over abundance of spotlight. I know it’s nearly pointless to do a similar post on Rihanna or Kim Kardashian or Lady Gaga, but almost everybody else is free game.

You Be the Judge - Jennifer Lopez
Through almost all the photos I found, Jennifer Lopez rocks just about the same lip gloss color, but she experiments with hair, eyeshadow shades (although the same technique – call her Miss Smokey), lash lengths, and wait for it – blush! A girl after my own heart. From corals to pinks, and plums to golden bronze.

Which one do you prefer? And who do you want to see next?

Clear Skin on All Sides: Dermalogica Tips for Clear Back

Funktional at ShopStyle

One of the main components of summer is the amount of bare skin exposed to the world. It’s as if there is a worldwide contest raging on and every day a new competitor enters the race.

Because of my body shape, I have to bow out of the competition – for example, the use of dresses or skirts need to have an appropriate use of shorts – not just to make sure boys won’t look up for a nice view from the bottom of a staircase or in case I get stuck over a subway grate, but because my anatomy creates too much friction (and then too much whining about pain from me) to live peacefully without the presence of shorts or shapewear. Yet and still, as the skin showoff competition in the world goes on in the leg sector without my participation, the back is fair game.

Summer has it’s negative sides too though. It is not until this season and worldwide competition is silently notifying every boy and girl in this world, do people notice that after months and months of rigorous attention to their skin on the front, their back is in need of attention. Bacne is rearing it’s ugly head.

I find that bacne occurs after excessive sweating – for example, everyday is regularly a hot day for me. Between having my laptop warm up my lap (even on a cooling lap tray), the clothing I need to wear inside and outside to be decent, and the general warmth in the air, there is plenty sweat that makes its way down my back. Sometimes (okay lots of times) I’m even guilty of scratching my back against corners and doors to remove a nagging itch from my life. The sweat buildup, constant contact with clothing, and possible scratching irritates the skin on your back and may lead to acne.

The tie for first place agitator of bacne in my life is hair. My hair requires numerous products, starting from leave in conditioner, to gels, mousses, oils, and hair sprays. On the days that I don’t wash my hair, I still use products. The products then transfer onto your skin by two ways – letting your hair down, or again, sweating. That’s when you get a nagging pimple at the nape of your neck and the start of a throbbing pain in your temple.

Check out some tips to prevent and handle bacne from Annet King, Director of Global Education of The International Dermal Institute (founded by Jane Wurwand – also founder of Dermalogica skincare).

  • Cleansing: Be sure to use a soap and fragrance-free anti-bacterial cleansing wash. Many people over-cleanse the skin with harsh soaps and use vigorous scrubbing tools and products. The use of Alkaline-based surfactants or soaps not only rob skin of moisture, but also provide a bacteria-loving environment.
  • Toning: Spritz with an oil and bacteria controlling toner. Many bacne sufferers will try mentholated and alcohol astringents which provide a cooling sensation on their skin, however in most cases these are S.D.-Alcohol based, which strips the skin of lipids, causing the skin to over-produce oil.
  • Exfoliate gently: Many people use Loofahs and brushes to try and rid the skin of back acne, which only worsens the condition. The use of such tools causes micro-lacerations in the skin, making it once again a hospitable environment for bacteria to breed and grow. A gentle fragrance-free scrub should be lightly massaged over the area and washed off.
  • Treat the affected area overnight with a Salicylic Acid-based gel as well as during the day.
  • Avoid waxy hair product that may come in contact with the skin on the back.
  • Wear cotton clothing versus synthetic fibers which can trap oil and dead cells.
  • Pillow and sheet hygiene is a must! Pillowcases and sheets should be changed at least twice a week. Avoid using fabric conditioners on bed linens.

Get the Look: Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba was seen sporting a cute high waist belted skirt with a sheer top and some cute strappy sandals. I thought it’d be a great look to copy, and put together a look for y’all. Everything from the sheer top to the cameo necklace, all under $50 (except for the Sigerson Morrison flats, those are a bit over $100 but look like they’re worth every penny).

Nails will Prevail

Prevail Nail Polish
Drugstores are my weakness. Well maybe not just me, but when I peruse through the beauty, skin, and haircare aisles, I seem to be the only one to aimlessly look around and buy things I don’t really need in my life, save for the need to quell my curiosity.

Duane Reade has been stepping it up lately. They are on the beauty wagon of all drugstores. Notice how every drugstore near you has a skincare consultation center, skincare specialists, and even beauty events?

Some Duane Reade locations in Manhattan have an aisle or two to compete with the best of the Sephoras out there with brands like Nailtini, POP Beauty and Becca fully stocked on their shelves. That though, is for another post on another day. When I went to the neighborhood Duane Reade, I didn’t necessarily see the extravagant brand names, but I did spy a new nail polish brand that was begging to come home with me. What could I do? I obliged!

Prevail is a brand completely foreign to me. When I went on an initial internet hunt for the company, I found a link to purchase products from the brand at drugstore.com and got extremely excited that the search was so quick and efficient only to learn that the products on the site were adult diapers. Whoops! It turns out Prevail is a private brand of Duane Reade. It is part of their makeover of the brand and overall company. (source Private Label Mag).

When I was at the drugstore, all I needed to see was the color selections and the color names to start the “I need this because…” conversation with myself. Upon a quick (and taboo) swatch test, I picked three colors to come home with me. A bright pink, purple, and a forest green. The first and last colors seemed to be shades completely unlike any in my collection, and the purple quite similar to the Mattese and Color Club purples I own; both of which are uncommonly similar in name (Mattese is Pucci and Color Club is Pucci-licious).

I love the names because a lot of them are named after New York streets or neighborhoods.

Lohan 6126

6126 at ShopStyle

When celebrities branch out into new marketing ventures and start opening up their clothing lines, water, candy, shoe, and whatever other lines are willing to sport their name or take their money, it’s a toss up for the quality and shelf life of their products.

With the hard luck that Lindsay Lohan seems to have come under for the past couple of years, one would think that she would shrink away into oblivion. The girl is resilient though. Her line 6126 is sporting a new season.

The shoot includes La Lohan and her little sister Ali.

There are some designs that look a bit funky considering how the photos were shot, and there are some that make me want to save my pennies.

I’m totally loving the shoots of Ali and the shoots of each gal by themselves. I’m a bit over the shoots with the dominatrix and the boy toys, how about you?

Overall, I’d say my verdict is a go for Miss Lindsay. I like the additions in this season and am looking forward to more. I hope the girl has more good than bad in her future and gets a better comeback than just a walk back home (from court…).

Check out some of the new designs:

Looks like sis Ali has done a lot of growing up, no?!

There are also actually some handbags coming out starting November that look quite spiffy and I can’t wait to get images to share!

What do you think?

Cosmetic Graffiti

Eyeko Graffiti EyelinerAs you may have read, I am on an Eyeko roll right now. The products are rocking my socks with the cute packaging and the simple and efficient way in which they do what they promise to do. I was excited to try out the Graffiti Eyeliner because I didn’t use liquid or felt liners in a long time. Sometimes you need to phase out products and bring them back into your life to keep things fresh. I’m sure your skin would love it too.

I tried out the Graffiti Eyeliner Pen in Fierce Purple. Purple eyes are perfect for anyone, and a liquid line in purple just sounds great, doesn’t it?

The application is pretty smooth. I had a mental checklist in my head from the moment that I opened the cap. What does a good liquid liner do? I tried to apply it in a thick layer as well as a thin layer. I checked for feathering and whether it was smudge-proof or not.

Eyeko Graffiti Eyeliner
I’m loving it for the application types. The thin and thick variety is definitely something to talk about and I can picture a lot of looks I can do with this. There is a tiny factor of bleeding, depending on how you apply it, but it’s not a messy bleed, it’s a natural bleed from a liquid liner. The only thing I couldn’t really work out is blending it in. This is not a blendable liner. Once you apply it, you’re finished. It’s set like stone.

The color is great too because it’s not an obnoxious bright purple. I will be rocking this to work.

If you’re a plenty shades of shadow kind of girl, this is great for above or below shadow. If you apply it under shadow, you will have a permanent makeup lined eye look going on for the day.

Eyeko Graffiti Eyeliner
The packaging for the eyeliner pen isn’t as cutesy as most of the other items in the Eyeko line, but it’s a good change to the mix to keep it from being overly sweet. They still have the rounded letters and some hearts.

Check out how it looked on me (and don’t mind the unruly brows):
Eyeko Graffiti Eyeliner
I wasn’t too neat with the application, but as you can see, it’s not picky with how you apply it, as it’s pretty low maintenance and neat all on its’ own. If you are in the market for a liquid liner, I would recommend this one as your first option.

The colors available online are black, brown, navy, and purple. All the colors you need to match everything else in your makeup drawer. £5.00 ($8.00) on the site and also available at ASOS.

Do you use liquid liners? Have you tried Eyeko?
