Magazine Weekend – Glamour 2009

Happy weekend everyone!

The issue I read back to back is Glamour for June 2009. I have already posted about this magazine last weekend, but the juicy advice is just too good to share with you this weekend as well.

With the tightening of everyone’s budget – I found it good to hear some advice for how to dress and be stylish at work and still keep your job. We don’t all want to be black slacks and white button down drones, now do we?

There was also some more, with the one and only Giorgio Armani. Zoe Seldana had a photo shoot to accompany his advice, and both were a good time to read.

Some advice he had:

say to yourself, I know what I like, and if fashion proposes something that’s not me, forget it.

wearing a dress with just one piece of jewelry guarantees that you bring attention to that single piece

His mother’s advice to him: if you wish to create beauty, do only what is necessary and no more

we can’t take couture and ‘important’ evening dresses too seriously

Judge this!

Not too long ago, I was reading Life & Style magazine and the cover was all about the “drama” of Megan Fox vs. Angelina Jolie. The claims are that as Angelina gets older, Megan is deliberately stealing her spotlight and possible roles. This was highlighted by a statement from the Lara Croft crew – saying that they wanted Megan to do the next sequel b/c she is younger. Around the same time, Miss Fox had an interview with Entertainment Weekly in which she showed no amusement with the comparison. You can also check it out here from UsWeekly.

So I don’t know if y’all know this about me – but as much as I may read tabloids, it pretty much just slides off my shoulders once I’m done. A lot of it is good and quick entertainment on a subway ride, or in the bathroom (yeah I said it!). Ultimately, the media always makes something big out of nothing, and generally all the time us being outsiders to situations of the rich and ludicrous :)~ just means that we only know what we see.

But let’s be superficial.

I’m going to show you the cover of the mag. Then, I’m going to show you Angie at the Cannes Film Festival, followed by Megan Fox at the Transformers premiere in Germany (red) and Tokyo (purple). Your job, Ladies & Gents of the Jury is to decide if this is a case of the copycat or the leggy sexmachines.

Jemma Kidd for Target

It’s Review Time!

This week’s review is a little off the regular path. This one is more a selection of a line of products, than it is a single product. I guess that’s pretty similar to what I’ve done before too then, huh?

What it is:

This is a cosmetics brand from makeup artist Jemma Kidd. This is a limited edition collaboration with Target, as the rest of her name brand is sold in Bergdorf Goodman, & several Neiman Marcus stores.

There is an extensive line of products, but I only bought the an eyeshadow duo and a gloss lipstick. Both of these are $18 each, and can be found here. Also make sure to click on the link to see the video with Jemma. I tried to embed it but they didn’t have a link.

Review (5 highest, 1 lowest):

Packaging: 4 out of 5 (the e/s is nothing special – but the lipsticks are very cute)

Price: 3.5 out of 5 ($18 for the E/S duo & the Lipstick)

Quality: 3.5 out of 5 for the e/s and 4 out of 5 for the lipstick

Overall: barely 4 out of 5 (b/c the lipstick was good)

The product(s):

The swatches:
E/S Duo in Chic
Sheer Vanity Gloss & Glaze Lipstick in A la Mode

The lipstick is really creamy and has a great gloss to it.

Verdict:
So this one was pretty simple. First, I didn’t do a look because these are simple and average colors. Also, the pigmentation, the finish, and the quality of the eyeshadow is the same as well. Simple. Nothing special.

The package is sweet and petite, and reminds me a little of Almay and other products with initials embossed in the powder. For this price, I wouldn’t recommend it, because it does nothing to beat out cheaper competition.

The lipstick however, not only has the cutest packaging with flower illustrations, but it is also super creamy, has a very high gloss factor for a lipstick format (there are not many with that – thus my lip gloss obsession), and the color is discreet but definitely original and great looking.

I would recommend you shell out the bucks for the lippie but not the e/s.

How about you? Ever tried this brand?

Disagree with me?

Lemme hear it!

[never mind this part:xhyadnqsm5]

What the?

So I went to Tarjayyyy for some cereal, deodorant, and a birthday card.

I of course was seduced by the cosmetics aisle!

I got two things from the JK Jemma Kidd line (since Rai asked me about it) and two from the NP eye palette collection.

I have already tried the NP palettes, so I was just getting some more colors but one of the palettes (Atlanta) – described on the packaging as plum/purple looks very much brown/neutral to me. I went online to see if I was losing my mind and the images on the Target website are just as incorrect.

What I got: The packaging: The picture on the site:

and in real life:

Does that look like plum/purple to you?

Hot mess.

The damage:

NP E/S Palettes in Seattle & Atlanta

JK Jemma Kidd Sheer Vanity Gloss & Glaze in A la Mode & I-Style Pro Duo in Chic

Stay tuned for the JK review later in the day!

Magazine Weekend: Glamour June 09

Happy weekend everyone! For this issue of Magazine Weekend, we are reading Glamour Magazine with Renee Zellweger on the cover.

The article that I found interesting was advice from popular designer Michael Kors.

I don’t know if any of you read Glamour, but they are well known for their “Do’s & Don’ts” photo essays/features. Here, Michael Kors breaks down the rules about baring skin.

Sorry for the jumble here – I didn’t account for much space and it’s a little tight this weekend around, eh?

LG: Crazy Boys

Welcome back to another serving of Ladies and Gents of the Jury. Last week, we extended our judgement to the men, and this week we might just let them stay longer.

I couldn’t decide if I wanted to make two posts out of this or one, but alas – I consolidated into one.

This week Miss Yaya (man I love talking about myself in third person lol) is perplexed with men and their nutty photo shoots. There’s Bruce Willis with his new wife Emma for W who appears to be channeling his Live Free or Die Hard empire (with the emphasis on hard??) and Sacha Baron Cohen aka Brüno for GQ (a la Maxim/Playboy?).

While one photo shoot is meant to be edgy and dramatic (fyi- some pictures not safe for work), the other appeals to our funny bone. But did either of them hit the spot?

Click here for the: article, Bruce & Emma on the shoot.

Clip from behind the scenes:

W’s fashion assistants attest that the actor, … requested dumbbells for some last minute tune-ups. “It was challenging because we had literally just come from this great honeymoon period of eating great food all the time!” says Bruce…

Adds Emma, “We’d been going to dinner every day, drinking, enjoying not having to work out or think about the job or taking off our clothes on camera.”

“Vanity dies hard,” says Bruce with his trademark smirk. ‘It really does.’

an excerpt from the GQ interview with Brüno on Style.com:

Dear Brüno, if forced to choose: Dolce or Gabbana?
Gabbana. Dolce is bald, so zere’s no hair to grab hold of.

Dear Brüno, can men wear heels? When and why?
Of course. Some guys look great in heels—ze singer Pink, for example. Alzo, mein last boyfreund, Diesel, vas a genuine Pygmy only three eight, so ich made him vear heels so he could give me plow jops mitout me having to bend mein knees.

Dear Brüno, I am shocked by the cost of jeans these days. I saw one pair that retailed for $700—how is that possible?
Zat’s ze great thing abaus ze recession—stores are cutting zeir prices.

Click around for more photos from the W shoot & the GQ shoot.

I have to say I warmed up to the W photo shoot the more I read the article, though I still am not a fan of it, while the GQ article amused me and the photos hit more of a flat note…
