Use Before…

Cosmetic ExpirationMuch like food comes with stamps and labels advising you to use the product before a specific date, cosmetics follow a similar practice. The difference with cosmetics is that there is a life expectancy image cleverly placed on (usually) the label sticker, with a number inside of it. The numbers will vary from months to years. This applies to the open date, as air starts to get in and around the particles and contaminate all the good relations you worked so hard to cultivate.

Check out some of the Sally Beauty tips for how to use the life expectancy dates, and what items are on sale to exchange your oldies (although I have to admit, I disregard the signs sometimes!).

Snique Away!

MyOwnJudge - Snique InviteMaybe your inbox is over-saturated with the invites to sample sales online. Shoot, there are so many sales, and they happen so often, you may be inclined to vow never to shop retail again (although really – how else can you get the perfect item before inventory dwindles down to a wish-list?). There are some sites dabbling in destination sales, but they are not promised regularly, and lack variety – just enough sun and luxury for any guy or gal to sleep happy at night. Well guess what? Snique is just what the doctor ordered.

Welcome to the world of travel sample sales. Sign up and see what destinations come up. Currently, Belgium, New York (let me know if you’re coming!), and Costa Rica are up for grabs. Become a smart travel shopper – or hold out for that memorable trip. Or well… you know… play around with your shopping cart and dream of the day you can buy trips like you can lip gloss (and don’t forget about me when you get there either!).

Adventures at Sephora

NARS - Adventures at SephoraHopefully, this is the last time that I mention the backlog of posts and photos on my computer. Keeping current with data and getting back to people (e-mail and phone-wise) is a terrible vice that I seem to have perfected, instead of eradicated. My first catch-up starts with a new series to MOJ. There are always new series I am inspired to bring in, as well as some which don’t make much sense to continue with (do you agree? Let me know which need to be retired, or resurrected!). The new kid on the block is Adventures at Sephora. Sometimes, you just can’t buy everything that you want (wouldn’t that be nice?!).

NARS - Adventures at Sephora MyOwnJudgeAbout a month ago, I tried out some matte lipsticks by NARS. The part that attracted me the most was the allure of the lipsticks being named after cities. Universal glamour! The double win came as I spotted a lipstick with the same name as my hometown. I was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan – so imagine my surprise when I spotted a lipstick named the same! The color was a light beige, a little less loud and bright than I may have wished for (if I were to wish for a color…), but then again, this isn’t Vegas we’re talking about.

MyOwnJudgeWomp womp! The color is a fail for me. When trying on nude lip colors, the risk is always choosing a color that matches your skin tone far too much and makes your lips a bit invisible. I was super bummed that the shade I wanted to stock up on, because of the name, ended up being a match not made in heaven for me. [insert sad face here].

MyOwnJudge
I tried to cover it up with a gloss to make my lips a bit more existent, and it worked a little bit. I wasn’t impressed enough though, so I left empty handed. Maybe next time I’ll give Volga and Tonkin a chance.

What do you think? Have you tried any of these?

Winter Skin

Sometimes, it’d be easy to stay the same forever, but really – then we’d have a whole new set of complaints, right? The seasonal changes that come with every new year are sometimes a boon, and sometimes a perceived curse (who wants the snow to fall when they found the perfect mini? or the sun to shine so bright when you caught those cute shearling boots on clearance for almost as much as three lunches?). Given that the weather changes, it’s no surprise that skin follows. Even the neatest complexions and pore-less clones of the world (because I don’t believe they exist) have odd days and seasons where perfection brings patches one day, redness the other, and oilyness the next. I got some tips in my mailbox from Shaela Walker (Walker’s Apothecary founder and owner). Let me know if they’re any help, or if your questions are still unanswered!

How do I reduce wintertime skin redness?
Because skin redness is mostly caused by wind and dry heat, the best thing to do is rehydrate the skin and make sure it’s protected. It’s smart to use a cream cleanser in the winter because it’s more soothing and less stripping than other cleansers. Walker’s suggests using Evanhealy Rose Cleanser and cutting back on the amount of exfoliation in the winter to focus on hydration, using a richer moisturizer and a gentle oil or face balm at night. She suggests using Darphin Organic Aromatic Purifying Balm for extra hydration and for a relaxing treat, try chilling a gel mask to help constrict blood vessels and apply Walker’s Apothecary Chamomile Soothing Gel. Another trick is to find a serum that cancels out redness, hydrates skin and soothes inflammation such as Skinceuticals Phyto Corrective Gel, which has a cucumber and thyme formula.

My cold is drying out my nose and chin, what do I do?
It’s safe to use a gentle exfoliation mask once a week but make sure it contains enzymes to slough off dry skin and follow up with a hydrating mask such as Walker’s Apothecary Marine Enzyme Peel or Walker’s Apothecary Green Coffee Masque. It is also beneficial to use a cleansing milk or face oil with a washcloth, gently cleansing face in circular motions without rubbing. Follow by using a hydrating serum and a rich moisturizer like Walker’s Apothecary Super Moisturizing Serum on top of those extremely dry areas such as the cheeks, chin and nose.

How do I reduce unflattering under eye puffiness?
As soon as you see your eyes starting to puff up, try splashing your face with cold water and if you have the time place chilled green tea bags right under your eyes.

Have any more questions?

Wish You Were Here!

A quick note from Mexico to say that I have yet to figure out this internet business. As soon as I get access for longer than fifteen minutes a day, you’ll be the first to know. Until then – hope you are warm and enjoying the new year!

Obsessed With Her Secret

MyOwnJudgeThe story of Victoria’s Secret and I has been one commonly found in romance comedies. Two characters meet. They like each other. The next step becomes a falling out or separation of some sort. Fast forward plenty of time and they bump into each other and live happily ever after.

When I was younger, the allure of owning a lotion (or let alone something in their shopping bag) would make me mark it as first on the holiday wish list. Then on one splendid day, while on vacation, I touched a towel after applying lotion and I noticed that I turned it yellow. The dye in the lotion was coloring my towel – what was it doing to my skin? We had a breakup immediately thereafter, Victoria, and I. Up until I spotted a tweet with a lipstick shade I had to have and was surprised to hear it was from the forsaken store. Back in love I was.

Every trip to the store now brings me a new product to obsess about, there’s the mascara, the perfume, the lipstick, and wait, what is this? A new line of scrubs, scent, and skincare? Yes! I got the above three as their promotional deal and I can’t stop sniffing each product. I even used the scent to spray down my new suitcase (currently in Mexico with me!). They are all super lightweight, pleasant, and memorable. As always, the options are practically endless.

Have you tried anything new from Victoria’s Secret?

Cityscape NOTD

MyOwnJudgeThe greige hue is overwhelming my polish fantasies y’all. There is not a single time when I can walk past a polish line and not succumb to purchasing a grey/taupe color combination. Something about how subtle and different it is makes me a sucker each time.

MyOwnJudge MyOwnJudgeYou can probably tell which is the flash and which is without.

Prevail is a polish company found in Duane Reade drugstores on the east coast. Being that the company was bought by Walgreen’s, I am unsure if that means it will be on shelves nationwide.

How do you like the color?

Victoria’s Secret Eyeshadow Duo

MyOwnJudgeI never thought the day would come when Victoria’s Secret would add eyeshadow flat pans to their Beauty Rush line, as opposed to continually expanding their baked shadows. A baked shadow makes me as happy as the next makeup lover, but I have this thing about organization, and pulling out pans and placing them in the containers I want with the color themes the mind fancies.MyOwnJudgeThough cute, the packaging seems to be a little extra for the amount of product you’re buying. It reminds me of the pods (if that’s what they were called) used in The Jetsons to get around. Maybe it’s meant to make the shadow somewhat shatterproof – something to test and report!MyOwnJudgeI picked a nondescript light cream and khaki color combination Snow Toasty (and it seems it is no longer for sale online). The shadow is pretty silky to the touch.MyOwnJudgeColor swatches on paper, and on skin:MyOwnJudgeI applied the colors both dry and wet and was a bit underwhelmed. It barely gives much to write home about when dry, and appropriate for a neutral look when applied wet. The colors sell two for $12 or five for $20, with no limit to what you mix together – mascara, lip gloss, a lipstick, and a shadow duo? Be my guest. Within the price range it’s forgivable, but it’s more of a skip unless you wanted a nondescript neutral duo.

Have you tried these duos?

Daily Shine

MyOwnJudgePreaching about hair and skin being similar and their neverending thirst is not enough. You have to practice what you preach as well. Depending on how far into your non-washing schedule you’re in will direct what kind of product you can put in your hair. For example, one or two days into the schedule, you can get away with nearly any product. When you start getting to four to five days, you need to start skipping on products that don’t contribute to moisturizing your strands. At this point, creams are less optimal than oil-like products, because dry strands just make it disappear. MyOwnJudgeEnter into the courtroom: Avon Advance Techniques Daily Shine Dry Ends Serum. MyOwnJudgeThe product promises shine and more than 50% of a decrease in frizz on both wet and dry hair. Dry hair? I’ll take that challenge! MyOwnJudgeThe bottle nozzle is small, perfect for spot application on split ends and whatever parts of your hair need the juice. Also – it’s much easier to apply with the smaller opening than twist tops (who thinks of those kinds of openings with such a small bottle?!). MyOwnJudgeAfter about two pumps of product applied to the bottom half of my hair, I checked my before and after shots. From far it may not be obvious, but with lengthy experience with my hair, I can explain. Look at the middle to bottom part of the hair in the before shot – see the dullness in color and dryness? See how it looks like it took a vitamin shot in the after picture?

How do you moisturize your hair?

All That Glitters

MyOwnJudgeFollowing a self imposed no buy diet for the first half of the new year, was the discovery of a handful boxful of products I have yet to photograph or review. And here I was worried the diet would affect the posts!

Some new polishes to add to the roster are the Milani One Coat Glitters. The polishes are super dense and undeniable pigmented.MyOwnJudgeMyOwnJudgeI used two coats to create an even layer on my nails and was blown away. The glitters are the best glitters I have seen so far, and are a great balance of grainy, glitter, and pigment saturation. The polish is also not watery and wishy washy like a lot of glitters can get – there is no such thing as one coat and it’s still see through with these bad boys. The only exception is the rainbow confetti polish – but that’s not really a color if you think about it. The colors are so saturated that even applying a top coat is pointless after five seconds – the polish swallows up the shine.MyOwnJudgePretty!MyOwnJudgeI tried to do some shots to show the different looks of the confetti polish, with one coat on the left and a progression of sorts towards the right. Also fun to see the shapes and colors mix in, but unfortunately, I’d have to say this was the least favorite of the three.
